2016, Seminars in Diagnostic PathologyCitation Excerpt :In a review of 50 clinically defined cases, Flotte and Mihm45 described two lesional subsets—“atypical melanocytic hyperplasia,” which they went on to designate as “true lentigo maligna,” and a second group that featured individual cells and cellular nests at variable levels in the epidermis, with confluence of melanocytes in the basal layer, and uniform cytologic atypia (Fig. 7). The second group of lesions was called “malignant melanoma in situ, lentigo maligna type.”45 Although it is reasonable to think that clinical “lentigo maligna” could represent a spectrum of histological entities that vary somewhat in their biologic properties, the approach of Flotte and Mihm suggests that “lentigo maligna”—as they defined it—is biologically something less than MIS.
